La Asociación de Liderazgo Comunitario, antes llamada Proyecto de Casas Saludables, renació el pasado mes en City Heights, al expandir sus funciones sociales, mismos que incluyen consultoría legal, educativa, limpieza de calles, foros comunitarios, proyectos de infraestructura y servicios de salud y vivienda.
Tras proclamarse como organización no-lucrativa(501c3), pudieron re-establecerse y formar nuevas bases de apoyo para los residentes de City Heights, quienes a falta de recursos, salían triunfantes de la Academia de Liderazgo con información para cambiar su vivienda, más no para cambiar su calidad de Vida.
Como migrante, madre y residente de City Heights, La directora del proyecto, Virginia Ángeles, miró la necesidad de la población por estos servicios de empoderamiento, por lo que cambió el rumbo de la organización de Casas Saludables a Liderazgo Comunitario.
“Me dí cuenta que el problema era más grande”, agregó Ángeles al mencionar las condiciones de vivienda insalubre, tras conocer a cientos de niños que sufrían de asma por infestaciones en sus hogares. “No teníamos salario, ni recursos, pero creíamos en un cambio” añadió. Gracias a fondos de California Endowment y Alliance SD, pudieron crecer de un pequeño proyecto a una organización.
“Estamos cultivando líderes” afirmó la directora, al mostrarnos su felicidad de comenzar diversos proyectos en el área, pues de los 2 voluntarios que comenzaron el proyecto de viviendas, ahora son más de 80 que laboran diariamente para formular cambios en su sociedad
Los programas establecidos de la Asociación de Liderazgo Comunitario incluyen 3 comités, que se dedican a asistir a inquilinos con inquietudes sobre inmigración, vivienda, salud y educación.
Comité de Migración
Se proveen clases sobre la ley migratoria impartidas por un abogado especialista(preguntas como ¿Qué hacer si un familiar es detenido? ¿Qué son los cambios de migración? ¿Cómo se puede preparar para la reforma? Son contestadas).
Comité de Vivienda y Salud
Clases sobre derechos de inquilinos(Cartas al propietarios, peticiones a la ciudad de cambios de códigos, preguntas sobre arrendamientos y depósitos). Clases de alimentación y actividad física.
Comité de Educación
Traen representantes del Distrito Escolar Unificado para dar respuestas a las muchas interrogantes de los padres de familia en diversas escuelas de City Heights.
Como pionera de la Asociación, Virginia Ángeles conocía perfectamente el sufrimiento que conlleva la falta de información en los migrantes. Hace mas de 17 años llegó a San Diego, consiguió trabajo limpiando oficinas de noche, y desafortunadamente padeció el maltrato por parte de su empleador.

Advocating for City Heights ALC offers programs to better the quality of life within the residents.
The ALC (Association of Community Leadership), better know as The Healthy Homes Project (Proyecto de Casas Saludables), was reborn last month in City Heights, while expanding their social functions, which include legal and educational aid, street sweeping, community forums, infrastructure projects and health services.
After becoming a non-profit organization (501c3), they reestablished themselves and created new support roots for residents.
After concluding their courses in the Leadership Academy, the renters were enthusiastic to transform their way of life, however, without resources, couldn’t change the quality of it.
As a migrant, mother and resident of City Heights, Virginia Angeles, Executive Director of the Association, saw the neediness of the community for these empowerment services, such as immigration and health. Soon, she modified the organization’s way, renaming themselves, from Healthy Homes to ALC, a non-profit with an increase number of services.
“I realized that the problem was larger than though”, she commented. Hundreds of kids were living in homes with insanitary conditions and infestations, provoking terrible asthma at such a young age. “We did not have a salary, nor resources, but we believed that a change needed to be done”, said Angeles. Thanks to funds from California Endowment and Alliance SD, Healthy Homes grew from a small project, to an organization.
“We are cultivating leaders”, the Director confirmed. The group happiness showed us the enthusiastic and love for helping those in need. From the 2 volunteers that started Healthy Homes, now more than 80 collaborators are working daily to create a change on the society.
ALC has 3 committees, whom dedication is to assist with concerns about immigration, health, dwellings and education.
Immigration Committee:
Classes about immigration law imparted by a specialize lawyer (Family member detention by the authorities, immigration reform, law changes, etc.).
Healthy Homes Committee:
Courses about renter’s rights (property letters, city petitions, Zip Code modifications, deposits and payments.
Education Committee:
Special guests from San Diego Unified School District respond to parents, regarding school inquiries.
As a pioneer of the Association, Virginia Angeles, perfectly knew the suffering of a migrant, when clear information is not provided. Around 17 years ago, she arrived in San Diego with the illusion of conquering the American Dream. Soon, she started working as a Housekeeper, cleaning offices at night and taking care of her child during the day. Unfortunately, the American Dream she was looking for resulted in an abusive Employer whom made her work extra hours and with a very low salary. She stood up for herself and her co-workers, without noticing, that was her first encounter with a reality that she is trying to correct, with an abuse that gave her inspiration, and with a purpose that is making her a leader in the community.
